Never lose track of the date
Some events sit on the same day every year, like Christmas on 25 December or Halloween on 31 October. Others move, like Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November, or Easter, which follows the spring full moon and can land anywhere between 22 March and 25 April. Remembering a fixed number of days never works, because the answer changes the moment the clock passes midnight.
That is why each countdown here is computed rather than typed in. Each event carries a rule, the rule produces the date for any year, and the page resolves the next occurrence from today. After an event passes, the counter rolls forward on its own, so the page stays accurate without anyone maintaining it.
Moving holidays, handled
For holidays defined by a weekday rule, such as the last Monday of May or the second Sunday in May, the tool resolves the exact calendar date for the year in question. Easter and everything tied to it, including Good Friday and Mardi Gras, use the Gregorian computus, the same algorithm used to publish Easter dates decades in advance. Lunar festivals such as Diwali and Chinese New Year follow published dates, because they have no simple Gregorian rule.
The seasons appear twice, on purpose
Spring, summer, autumn and winter count down to the meteorological start of the season, on the first of March, June, September and December. The equinox and solstice pages count down to the astronomical start. Those are two different, equally real answers to "when does summer start", and this site publishes both instead of picking one and hiding the other.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out how many days until a date?
Count the whole midnights between today and the target date: today to tomorrow is one day, and the day of the event itself is zero. That is the convention every counter on this site uses, and it is why a countdown reads the same whether you open it at breakfast or just before midnight.
Do these countdowns update by themselves?
Yes. Each event carries a rule rather than a stored date, so the page resolves the next occurrence from today whenever it is loaded. Once an event passes, the counter rolls forward to the following year on its own, and the ten-year table shifts along with it.
Which time zone do the counts use?
Yours. A holiday is a calendar date rather than an instant, so the count is resolved against your own device's midnight. The number rendered on our server is corrected in your browser as soon as the page loads.
Where do the dates come from?
Every countdown page states the rule behind its date in plain language and links to a primary source where one has been verified directly. Where no source has been checked, the page says so rather than implying an authority that was never consulted.
Counting down to your own date instead? Use the countdown timer, or put one on your site with the embeddable widget. All of this data is also published as free JSON.
